How to Clean Windows in Direct Sunlight Without Streaks
The short answer: avoid it if you can. Sun dries the solution on the glass before you can squeegee it off, and that’s what leaves streaks. When you can’t avoid it, technique and timing make the difference. Here’s how.

Follow the Shade, Work in Small Sections
Clean each side of the house when it’s in shade, and when you must work in sun, wet and squeegee small sections quickly so nothing dries on the glass. This Old House gives the same reason: sun dries the cleaning solution before it can be squeegeed, which leaves streaks.
Window cleaning on a sunny day in Santa Cruz| Problem in sun | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Solution dries too fast | Soap and dirt left on the glass | Smaller sections, less solution |
| Hot glass | Water evaporates before squeegeeing | Wait for shade or cooler time |
| Bright low sun | Every streak is visible | Check from an angle; detail edges |
| Tap water drying | Mineral spots | Squeegee dry or rinse with pure water |

Best Time to Clean Each Side of the House
The sun’s path decides the order.
| Windows facing | In shade | Best time to clean |
|---|---|---|
| East | Afternoon | Afternoon |
| South | Early morning and late afternoon | Early or late; avoid midday |
| West | Morning | Morning |
| North | Most of the day | Any time |
In the Northern Hemisphere the sun rises in the east, crosses the southern sky and sets in the west, so east glass is shaded in the afternoon and west glass in the morning. On the Santa Cruz coast, grey mornings during the marine layer season give extra shade, which is one reason overcast days work well for glass. See the June Gloom window care guide.
Techniques for Cleaning Windows in Sun
If the glass has to be done in sun, change the method.
Use less solution
A few drops of mild soap in a bucket of water. Less product means less to dry on the glass.
Work small sections
Wash and squeegee one pane, or half a large pane, at a time.
Keep it wet
Re-wet any area that starts to dry before you squeegee it.
Squeegee immediately
Don’t wash the whole window first; wash and squeegee straight away.
Dry the edges fast
Wipe edges with a dry cloth before they evaporate into lines.
Check from an angle
Look at the glass from the side in the sun, where streaks show.
Milgard’s care guide recommends cleaning glass with mild dish soap and water, which is also easier to rinse off than heavier cleaners. See how professionals get streak-free results for the full method.

Frames and Solar Panels Should Wait for Shade
Glass isn’t the only thing that suffers in the sun.
Water-fed brush solar array tile roofThe AAMA cleaning guide for finished aluminum says it is preferable to clean metal when it’s shaded, warns against cleaning hot, sun-heated surfaces, and says to always rinse after cleaning. Cleaner drying on a hot frame can mark the finish. Solar panels sit in full sun at a low angle and get hot; cleaning them in the cool part of the day, following the panel maker’s instructions, avoids fast drying and spotting.
| Surface | In sun | Better |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum and painted frames | Cleaner dries and can mark finish | Clean in shade; rinse |
| Solar panels | Hot glass; fast drying | Early morning or late afternoon |
| Skylights | Hot roof and glass | Cooler part of the day |
| Glass railings | Both sides dry fast | Shady time, small sections |

Why Pure Water Helps in Sunny Conditions
It removes one of the two causes of spots.
Spots on sunny glass come from two things: cleaning solution that dries, and minerals in tap water that dry. Pure water from a deionization system has the minerals removed, so when it dries it leaves nothing behind. That’s why water-fed pole cleaning is less sensitive to drying than soap and squeegee work. Very hot glass still dries faster than ideal, so we still plan the order around the sun.
Sun and Shade Around the County
Fog, trees and exposure change the timing.
Water-fed pole upper window above roof| Area | Conditions | Timing tip |
|---|---|---|
| Coastal neighborhoods | Grey mornings in late spring and summer | Mornings often work for every side |
| Inland Scotts Valley and Aptos hills | Warmer, sunnier afternoons | Start early; sunny sides first thing or late |
| San Lorenzo Valley and Bonny Doon | Tree shade for much of the day | Shade helps; watch for pollen and sap |
| West-facing ocean view homes | Strong afternoon sun on big glass | Morning cleaning |
What Not to Do on a Sunny Day
These make sunny-day cleaning worse.
- Spraying a whole window with cleaner, then wiping
- Using paper towels on hot glass
- Hosing windows to rinse them in the sun
- Using strong cleaners that dry into residue
- Cleaning frames and glass at the same time in full sun
- Leaving edges to dry on their own
If the glass is still hazy after a careful clean in shade, it may be salt film, hard water or etching rather than streaks. See white film on coastal windows.
How a Professional Visit Works Around the Sun
The order changes with the day.
Check the sun and shade
We look at which sides are shaded when we arrive.
Start with shaded glass
Shaded sides first while sunny glass waits.
Pure water on high exterior glass
Water-fed pole work where it reaches, which is less sensitive to drying.
Inside glass during peak sun
Interior work often fits the hottest part of the visit.
Sunny glass last
Finished when it’s cooler or in shade.
How the Season Changes Sunny-Day Cleaning
The sun’s angle and the weather shift through the year.
| Season | Sun | What it means for glass |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | High sun, long days; coastal fog mornings | Coastal mornings work well; inland, start early |
| Fall | Lower sun, still warm afternoons | Low sun shows every streak; detail edges |
| Winter | Low sun between storms | Cooler glass dries slower; good between rains |
| Spring | Rising sun, pollen in the air | Rinse pollen off before squeegeeing |
Inside Glass on Sunny Days
Sun through the glass heats the inside surface too.
Detailing french door panes with towelInside glass in direct sun streaks for the same reason as outside glass. Clean sunny rooms early or late, close blinds on the side you’re not working on, and work one pane at a time. Inside film from cooking and fingerprints needs a proper soap wash, not just a spray, which makes timing matter even more.
What to Use for Sunny-Day Cleaning
The right tools make it quicker, which matters in sun.
| Tool | Why it helps in sun |
|---|---|
| Squeegee with sharp rubber | Removes water fast in one pass |
| Scrubber or sponge | Wets glass evenly and quickly |
| Bucket of mild soapy water | Less product to dry on the glass |
| Microfiber cloths | Fast edge drying |
| Spray bottle of plain water | Re-wet areas that start to dry |
Tinted, Coated and Tempered Glass in Sun
Some glass needs extra care in any weather.
Coated and tinted glass can be more sensitive to products and tools, and some tempered glass scratches easily. In sun, products dry faster and are harder to rinse off, so keep to mild soap and water, follow the glass maker’s instructions and avoid blades on glass you’re not sure about.
Skylights, Railings and Big Panes in Sun
Some glass is harder to keep out of the sun.
Skylight brush cleaning tile roof| Glass | Problem in sun | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Skylights | On the roof in full sun most of the day | Early morning, before the roof heats up |
| Glass railings | Both sides exposed; dry fast | Small sections, rinse and squeegee quickly |
| Large picture windows | Too big to finish before drying | Work in halves with an overlap |
| South-facing sliders | Sun most of the day | Early or late in the day |
Squeegee vs Pure Water in Sun
Each method handles sun differently.
| Soap and squeegee | Pure water and pole | |
|---|---|---|
| Main sun problem | Solution dries before squeegeeing | Very hot glass dries fast |
| Spot risk | Higher if tap water dries | Lower; no minerals to leave |
| Inside glass | Yes | Not used indoors |
| Best use | Inside glass and lower panes in shade | Upper exterior glass |
Cleaning Windows in the Sun: FAQ
Should you clean windows on a sunny day?
You can, but it’s harder. Sun dries the cleaning solution before it can be squeegeed off, which leaves streaks, and hot glass makes that worse. Shade, early morning, late afternoon or an overcast day is easier. On a sunny day, start with the shady side of the house.
Why do windows streak in the sun?
The heat dries the solution on the glass in seconds, leaving soap and dirt behind. Bright, low sun also shows streaks you wouldn’t see in shade.
What time of day is best to clean windows?
Early morning, late afternoon or whenever that side of the house is in shade. On the coast, cool overcast mornings are often ideal.
How do you clean windows in direct sunlight?
Work in smaller sections, keep the glass wet until it’s squeegeed, use less solution, and move to the shady side of the house first. Squeegee each section right away. On exteriors, pure water dries without leaving minerals, so it’s less prone to spotting than tap water.
Does pure water cleaning work in the sun?
Pure water dries without leaving minerals, so it’s less prone to spotting than tap water. Very hot glass can still dry faster than ideal, so timing still matters.
Is it bad to clean hot glass?
It makes streak-free results harder. Products also dry and can leave residue. It’s better to wait until the glass cools or is in shade.
Should window frames be cleaned in the sun?
Better not. The aluminum industry’s cleaning guide says it’s preferable to clean metal when shaded and warns against cleaning hot, sun-heated surfaces.
Can I clean solar panels in the sun?
Panels in full sun get hot and dry quickly. Cleaning in the cool part of the day is better, following the panel maker’s instructions.
Which side of the house should I clean first?
Whichever side is in shade. Follow the shade around the house as the sun moves.
Do you clean windows on sunny days?
Yes. We plan the order around the sun, starting with the shady sides and finishing sunny glass when it’s cooler.
Is morning or afternoon better for washing windows?
Whichever keeps that side of the house in shade: mornings for west-facing glass, afternoons for east-facing glass.
Can you clean windows on a hot day?
Yes, with care. Start early, work shaded sides first, use less solution and squeegee small sections quickly.
Why do my windows look clean until the sun hits them?
Low-angle sun shows thin films of soap, oil or minerals that are invisible in shade. Check glass from an angle in the light.
Is overcast weather good for cleaning windows?
Yes. Cool, grey days give you more time before the solution dries, which makes streak-free results easier.
Should I use vinegar on windows in the sun?
It dries just as fast as soap in the sun. Whatever you use, keep sections small and squeegee immediately.
Do professionals avoid sunny days?
Not entirely. They plan the order of work around the sun, cleaning shaded sides first and sunny glass when it’s cooler.
Does the sun make hard water spots worse?
Sun dries water faster, so any tap water left on glass leaves its minerals sooner. Squeegee dry or use pure water.
