Why Do Windows in Santa Cruz Get Dirty So Fast?
Three things work on Santa Cruz glass at once. Fog off Monterey Bay leaves a salt and mineral film every time it dries. City water is moderately hard, so sprinkler spray leaves white rings. And redwoods, oaks and eucalyptus drop pollen, sap and debris in the hills. Which one matters most depends on how close you are to the water.

| Location | On the northern edge of Monterey Bay, the county seat of Santa Cruz County | Homes near the water take fog and salt off the bay on most mornings in the foggy season |
| Climate | Warm-summer Mediterranean: mild, wet winters and warm, mostly dry summers, with fog common at night and in the morning, especially in summer | Two cleaning peaks: before winter storms and during the foggy summer months |
| Rainfall | About 30.8 inches a year on average, most of it from November through March | Rain spreads film around instead of washing it off, and it fills gutters |
| City water | Described by the City Water Department as moderately hard | Sprinkler spray leaves white rings on lower panes |
| Landmarks | The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (1904), Steamer Lane, Natural Bridges State Beach and UC Santa Cruz (1965) | Beach, cliff and campus areas each get a different mix of salt, sand and tree debris |
| River | The San Lorenzo River divides the city’s Westside and Eastside | We plan routes by side of the river so visits stay on time |

When Is the Best Time to Clean Windows in Santa Cruz?
The short answer is early October and again in late spring. October is the last dry month before the storms, so gutters, skylights and glass get done before the rain. Late April or May clears the spring pollen and sets the glass up for the foggy summer. Here’s the full year, using average monthly rainfall for Santa Cruz.
| Month | Average rainfall | What to clean |
|---|---|---|
| October | 1.34 in | Last dry window before storms. Clean gutters, skylights and glass. |
| November | 3.27 in | Rain picks up. Book gutters early in the month if you missed October. |
| December | 6.47 in | Wettest month on average. Gutters under trees may need a second clean. |
| January | 6.46 in | Storm season. Inside glass and storefronts on dry days. |
| February | 6.07 in | Still wet. Plan the spring clean for the first dry stretch. |
| March | 4.06 in | Rain eases. Good time to wash off the winter’s streaks. |
| April | 1.97 in | Spring pollen starts. Windows and solar panels. |
| May | 0.88 in | Fog season begins. A clean now sets up the summer. |
| June to September | 0.01 to 0.21 in a month | Almost no rain, frequent morning fog. Oceanfront glass hazes fastest now. |
Rainfall figures are long-term monthly averages for Santa Cruz (source). Any single year can be wetter or drier.
How We Clean Windows in Santa Cruz
Coastal film, hard water and tree sap each need a different step. Here’s what a full visit looks like.
Cleaning upper windows with a water-fed poleWalk the house first
We check every pane for scratches, failed seals, etched hard water stains and loose screens, and point them out before any work starts.
Screens off, tracks cleared
Screens come out and are brushed and rinsed. Sand, salt and debris are cleared from tracks so they don’t smear onto clean glass.
Wash with solution, not just water
Salt film and sunscreen haze need a cleaning solution to lift. Plain water moves them around and they dry back as streaks.
Squeegee and detail
Glass is squeegeed dry and edges are detailed by hand. Frames and sills are wiped down inside and out.
Upper exterior glass from the ground
Where it suits the window, a water-fed pole with purified water reaches second-story glass without ladders against the house. Purified water dries without spots.

What Does Moderately Hard Water Mean for Your Glass?
Hardness is a measure of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When water dries on glass, those minerals stay behind as white spots. A commonly used scale puts water into four groups:
| Hardness (mg/L as calcium carbonate) | Classification |
|---|---|
| 0 to 60 | Soft |
| 61 to 120 | Moderately hard |
| 121 to 180 | Hard |
| Over 180 | Very hard |
The City of Santa Cruz describes its water as moderately hard (source). The hardness scale above is the generally accepted division cited on the USGS water hardness FAQ (source). Moderately hard water won’t etch glass overnight, but sprinkler spray that dries on the same pane day after day builds up a crust that a normal wash won’t move. That’s when hard water stain removal comes in.
- Aim sprinklers away from glass. This does more than any cleaning product.
- Don’t hose windows off and let them air dry. Tap water leaves its own spots.
- Clean spotted panes sooner, not later. Fresh spots come off in a normal clean; old ones may need stain removal.

Window Cleaning in Santa Cruz: FAQ
Do you clean windows everywhere in the City of Santa Cruz?
Yes, every neighborhood, including the Westside, Downtown, Seabright, the Eastside, the Harbor and the UC Santa Cruz area.
How often do Santa Cruz homes and storefronts need window cleaning?
Quarterly near the ocean, every four to six months a mile or so inland, and monthly or more for downtown storefronts.
Why do my Santa Cruz windows look hazy right after cleaning?
Coastal fog leaves salt and minerals on the glass as it dries, and dust sticks to that film. It builds fastest on glass facing the water.
Is Santa Cruz city water hard?
The City of Santa Cruz Water Department describes it as moderately hard, enough to leave white rings where sprinklers hit glass.
Do you clean window tracks and screens?
Yes, on every visit, at no extra charge.
What sets the price of window cleaning in Santa Cruz?
It depends on the number of panes, height, access and condition. We give a flat quote before we start. See our cost guide for what moves the price.
When is the best time to clean windows in Santa Cruz?
Early October, before the winter storms, and late spring, after pollen season and before the summer fog. Oceanfront homes often add a mid-summer clean.
How much rain does Santa Cruz get?
About 30.8 inches a year on average, with December, January and February the wettest months and almost no rain from June through September.
Will the winter rain clean my Santa Cruz windows?
No. Rain moves salt film and dust around and leaves its own spots as it dries.
Do you use pure water?
For upper exterior glass we often use a water-fed pole with purified water, which dries without spots. Lower glass is washed with a cleaning solution and squeegeed.
