Gutter Cleaning Before Storm Season in Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz gets most of its rain from November through March, often in big storms. Gutters full of needles and leaves from the dry months can’t drain that water. Cleaning them in September or October, before the first storm, is the single most useful job to book before winter.

Clean Them Before the First Big Storm
Over the dry months, gutters fill with needles, leaves and dust. When the first big storm hits, clogged gutters overflow, sending water down walls and toward the foundation instead of through the downspouts. Book gutter cleaning for September or October, with downspouts checked, so the house is ready before the rains.
Gutter cleaning on a Santa Cruz County home| Month | Average rain (Santa Cruz) | Gutter task |
|---|---|---|
| September | Very little | Clean gutters; check downspouts |
| October | 1.34 in | Last chance before the storms |
| November to February | 3.27 to 6.47 in a month | Check after big storms, especially under trees |
| March and April | 4.06 and 1.97 in | Spring clean if storms filled them |

What Clogged Gutters Do in a Storm
A gutter only works if water can reach the downspout.
Removing wet debris from gutter| Problem | What happens |
|---|---|
| Overflow | Water spills over the edge and down the walls |
| Pooling near the foundation | Water soaks into the soil next to the house |
| Damaged walls and trim | Water running down exterior walls stains and wears them |
| Heavy, sagging gutters | Wet debris adds weight and pulls on hangers |
| Blocked downspouts | Water backs up even if the gutter looks clear |
GuideOne’s risk management guidance notes that clogged gutters can overflow and let water seep into the soil near a building, endangering the foundation, and can contribute to indoor flooding. It recommends cleaning gutters at least twice a year, more often near tall trees and after severe weather, and equipping downspouts with an extension of at least six feet from the building.

Santa Cruz County Storms Are Serious
Recent winters have shown how much water arrives at once.
On January 4, 2023, a powerful storm damaged the Capitola Wharf and the Seacliff State Beach pier, flooded businesses in Capitola Village and led to evacuation orders for Paradise Park along the San Lorenzo River and areas along the Pajaro River, with evacuation warnings for Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond and Felton. West Cliff Drive was closed by fallen trees and rocks pushed up by waves.
Gutters won’t stop a storm like that, but clear gutters and downspouts mean the rain that falls on your roof goes where it should.

Dry Debris Is a Fire Season Problem Too
Gutters full of needles in late summer are fuel.
CAL FIRE’s defensible space guidance tells homeowners to remove dead leaves and pine needles from the yard, roof and gutters. Cleaning gutters in early fall handles both concerns: dry debris during the end of fire season, and drainage for the rainy season. In the San Lorenzo Valley and Bonny Doon, where tree cover is heavy, this matters most.
How Fast Gutters Fill Around the County
Trees decide most of it.
| Area | Main debris | Suggested cleaning |
|---|---|---|
| San Lorenzo Valley | Redwood needles, leaves | Fall, plus winter or spring |
| Bonny Doon | Needles, leaves, ash in fire years | Fall, plus after storms |
| Scotts Valley | Oak and pine debris | Fall, plus spring if heavy |
| Aptos hills and Soquel | Mixed tree debris | Fall |
| Coastal neighborhoods | Leaves, sand, salt grime | Fall |
Boulder Creek, in the San Lorenzo Valley, averages about 52 inches of rain a year, far more than the city of Santa Cruz, which is one reason gutters there need more attention.

Do Gutter Guards Remove the Need for Cleaning?
They reduce it. They don’t end it.
| No guards | With guards | |
|---|---|---|
| Leaves | Fill the gutter | Mostly kept out |
| Needles and fine debris | Fill the gutter | Can sit on top or get past some guards |
| Cleaning needed | At least yearly, often more | Less often, but still checked |
Signs Your Gutters Are Clogged
You can spot most of these from the ground.
| Sign | What it means |
|---|---|
| Water spilling over the edge in rain | Gutter or downspout blocked |
| Plants growing out of the gutter | Debris has been sitting long enough to sprout |
| Sagging sections | Weight of wet debris pulling on hangers |
| Stains on walls below the gutter | Repeated overflow |
| No water from a downspout in rain | Downspout blocked |
| Puddles along the foundation | Water not being carried away |
Downspouts Matter as Much as Gutters
A clean gutter with a blocked downspout still overflows.
Downspouts carry the water from the gutter to the ground. If an elbow is blocked, the gutter fills and overflows even after it’s been cleaned. GuideOne’s guidance is to check downspouts for debris, confirm water is directed away from the foundation and use extensions of at least six feet from the building.

What to Check After a Big Storm
A quick look after the first big storm of the season.
Pulling plants out of gutterLook from the ground
Check for overflow stains, sagging or detached sections.
Check downspouts
Are they draining, and are extensions still in place?
Look for debris on the roof
Branches and needles in valleys and around skylights.
Check inside
Look for water stains on ceilings near skylights and exterior walls.
Book a follow-up if needed
Under heavy trees, a mid-winter cleaning is often worth it.
Before You Climb a Ladder
Gutter cleaning is mostly about safe access.
- Use a stable ladder on firm, level ground, and don’t overreach
- Never work on a wet or mossy roof
- Wear gloves; gutter debris can hide sharp metal
- Don’t lean a ladder on the gutter itself
- Have someone with you
- Leave two-story and steep roofs to someone with the right equipment
What Gutters Actually Do
A gutter system is simple, which is why small blockages matter.
Gutters catch the water running off the roof edge and carry it to downspouts, which take it to the ground and away from the house. Every part has to stay open: the gutter, the outlet into the downspout, the elbows and the extension at the bottom. A handful of needles at the outlet can stop the whole run.
Cleaning vs Repair
Some gutter problems need a different trade.
| Problem | Cleaning? | Repair? |
|---|---|---|
| Full of debris | Yes | No |
| Blocked downspout | Yes, where reachable | Sometimes, if crushed or disconnected |
| Sagging section | Helps if it’s debris weight | Often needs re-hanging |
| Leaking seams | No | Yes, resealing |
| Water standing in the gutter | No | Yes, slope needs adjusting |
We photograph anything that needs repair so you can get it quoted. See gutter cleaning for what’s included.
Clear the Roof, Not Just the Gutters
Debris upstream of the gutter causes problems too.
Skylight cleaning brush rinseNeedles and leaves collect in roof valleys and around skylight curbs, where they hold water against flashing and wash into the gutters in the first storm. Clearing valleys and skylights on the same visit means the gutters stay clear longer. Roofs should never be pressure washed; see soft wash vs pressure wash.
Gutter Cleaning Before Storm Season: FAQ
I only want to clean my gutters once or twice a year. What are the best times?
Before the first big storms, usually September or October, is the one cleaning not to skip. If you do a second, homes under heavy trees should book it in winter or spring, after storms have brought down more needles and branches. With no trees nearby, once a year before the rains is usually enough.
What’s the worst that could happen if I don’t keep up with cleaning my gutters?
Water overflows instead of draining. GuideOne’s risk guidance notes that clogged gutters let water seep into the soil near the building, which can threaten the foundation and contribute to indoor flooding. Water backing up at the roof edge can also find its way in, and dry needles in gutters are a fire concern.
How many gutter cleanings a year are recommended?
At least twice a year in most places, according to GuideOne’s guidance, and more often near tall trees, in rainy areas and after severe weather.
How far should downspouts discharge from the house?
GuideOne recommends a minimum six-foot extension from the building to carry water away from the foundation.
Do I need gutter cleaning if I have gutter guards?
Usually less often, but guards still need checking. Needles and fine debris can sit on top of or get past some guards.
Is gutter cleaning important for fire safety?
Yes. CAL FIRE’s defensible space guidance tells homeowners to remove dead leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters.
Can gutters be cleaned in the rain?
Light rain can be workable, but wet roofs and ladders aren’t safe. We reschedule if conditions aren’t safe.
Do you check downspouts?
Yes. We clear gutters by hand, check that downspouts run, and send before and after photos.
Should windows be cleaned after gutters?
Yes, ideally on the same visit. Gutter work drops debris and dirty water down the house, so windows go last.
How far ahead should I book fall gutter cleaning?
A few weeks ahead for September and October. Call or text with a few photos for a flat quote.
If gutters are clogged, will water back up on the property?
It can. When gutters clog, water overflows or backs up at the roof edge and around skylights, where it can find its way in. Overflow also soaks the soil next to the foundation. If you see ceiling stains, have a roofer check, and get the gutters cleared before the next storm.
Do you clean gutters on two-story homes?
Yes, with proper ladder setups and safe access. Tell us about the house when you ask for a quote.
Do you haul away the debris?
Yes. Debris is bagged and removed from the property.
Should gutters be cleaned again in spring?
Under heavy trees, often yes. Storms bring down needles and branches through the winter.
Is October too late for gutter cleaning?
Not usually. Santa Cruz averages about 1.34 inches of rain in October, and the heavier storms usually come from November on, so October still works.
Can you clean skylights and gutters together?
Yes. Both need roof access, so they’re done on the same visit, with windows cleaned last.
Why do gutters overflow in heavy rain but not in light rain, even when they’re clean?
Heavy rain can bring more water than the gutter and downspouts can carry. The downspout may be partly blocked lower down, the gutter may need more slope, or the run may need another downspout. We photograph what we see so a gutter installer can quote the fix.
Do gutters need cleaning if there are no trees nearby?
Less often, but roof grit, dust and debris still collect. Once a year before the rains is usually enough.
