Skylight Cleaning in Santa Cruz, CA

Skylights face straight up, so they catch more fog film, pollen and needle debris than any window in the house. A lot of companies here won’t do them. We do, inside and out, with the right cleaner for glass and a different one for acrylic domes.

Why they get so dirty

Why Skylights in Santa Cruz Get Dirty So Fast

A window sheds some dirt every time it rains. A skylight doesn’t, because it faces the sky. Fog settles on it every night, debris from overhanging trees sits on it, and rain spreads the dirt into a film instead of washing it off.

Marine layer film

The same fog that hazes windows on the Westside and Pleasure Point dries on a skylight in a flat layer, every night it rolls in.

Needles, pollen and sap

Redwood and pine needles collect against the curb of the skylight. Spring pollen and eucalyptus sap land on the glass and stay. The same debris fills the gutters.

Gutter cleaning

The inside gets dirty too

Kitchen grease, dust, cobwebs in the light well, and condensation film on bathroom skylights. Cleaning only the outside leaves half the haze.

Every skylight type

Skylight Types We Clean, and How Each One Is Handled

Glass and acrylic need different cleaners. Using a glass cleaner on an acrylic dome can damage it.

Why not just use glass cleaner on a skylight? On glass, a mild cleaner is fine. On acrylic domes, skylight manufacturers specifically warn against ammonia-based cleaners, glass cleaning fluid and solvents, because they attack the plastic. Abrasives and razor blades scratch it. We check what your skylight is made of before anything touches it.

What’s Included in Our Skylight Cleaning

Inside and outside, frame to light well.

Included

  • Outside glazing. Cleaned from the roof with the right cleaner for glass or acrylic.
  • Curb and frame. Needles, leaves and grime cleared from around the skylight so water drains off it.
  • Inside glazing. Cleaned from a ladder below, drop cloths down.
  • Light well. Dust and cobwebs cleared from the shaft walls we can reach.
  • A look at the seals and flashing. Fogging between panes, cracked glazing, yellowed or crazed domes, or gaps around the curb get photographed and flagged.

Not included (we’ll tell you who to call)

  • Skylight replacement or re-glazing
  • Leak repair and flashing work
  • Replacing fogged double-pane units
  • Installing new skylights or tubes

If we see any of these, you get photos and a straight explanation.

Safety

How We Clean Skylights Safely

A skylight is not built to hold a person’s weight. Every year people are hurt falling through them. That shapes how we work.

“Do you walk on the skylight?”

Never. We don’t step on, kneel on or lean on skylight glazing or domes, ever.

“How do you reach it?”

Ladders with stabilizers to the roof edge, and soft brushes on extension poles so we can reach the glazing without standing over it.

“What about tile and steep roofs?”

We check the roof surface before going up. If a roof isn’t safe to walk, we clean from the edge or tell you we can’t do it safely.

“What about the inside?”

Drop cloths under the skylight, a ladder set clear of furniture, and microfiber for the glazing.

“What if it’s raining?”

We reschedule. Wet roofs and ladders are not worth the risk.

Pricing, explained

How Much Does Skylight Cleaning Cost?

It costs less as an add-on to a window cleaning than as a separate trip. Here’s what moves it:

Cleaning skylight frame water-fed poleCleaning skylight frame water-fed pole

Number and size

One small dome over a hallway is a quick add-on. A row of large glass skylights over a great room takes longer.

Roof access

Low-pitch composition roofs are straightforward. Steep, tile or multi-story roofs take more setup.

Inside height

A skylight over a vaulted ceiling needs a taller ladder and more care than one over a standard ceiling.

Text a photo of the skylight from inside and, if you can, one of the roof. You’ll usually have a flat quote the same day.

Schedule

How Often Should Skylights Be Cleaned?

The easiest schedule is to do skylights with your window cleaning. A guide by area:

Where you liveHow oftenWhy
Near the water: West Cliff, Pleasure Point, Capitola, Rio Del MarTwice a yearMarine layer film builds fast on glass that faces up.
Under trees: Felton, Ben Lomond, Scotts Valley, Aptos hillsTwice a yearNeedles, pollen and sap. Clearing the curb also helps water drain.
Everywhere elseOnce a yearUsually timed with a spring window cleaning.

Can skylights be cleaned with a hose? A hose moves loose debris but leaves tap water minerals behind as spots, and it doesn’t touch the film. On acrylic domes, never use a pressure washer.

Cleaning the Inside of a Skylight

The inside collects dust, cobwebs and sometimes condensation marks.

SkylightHow we reach the inside
Low, flat ceilingsFrom a stepladder, with floors protected
Vaulted ceilingsExtension poles or a taller ladder, set up safely
Skylight shafts (light wells)Cleaned as far as safe access allows
Tubular skylightsThe interior diffuser is cleaned; the tube itself is sealed

Condensation marks on the inside usually come from warm, moist indoor air meeting a cold skylight. Cleaning removes the marks, but better ventilation is what stops them coming back.

Skylights With Gutters, Solar and Windows

If we’re on the roof anyway, it makes sense to do everything up there at once.

Glass and polycarbonate roofs on sunrooms, conservatories and patio covers are covered on sunroom and glass roof cleaning.

Questions

Skylight Cleaning FAQ

What Santa Cruz homeowners ask before booking.

Do you clean skylights inside and out?

Yes. The outside from the roof, the inside from a ladder below, plus the frame, curb and the light well we can reach.

How do you clean an acrylic skylight dome?

With a diluted mild soap and water, a soft cloth and light pressure, then a clean water rinse. No ammonia, no glass cleaner, no solvents, no abrasives, and not in direct sun.

Can I use Windex on my skylight?

On a glass skylight a mild cleaner is fine. On an acrylic or plastic dome, skip it. Skylight manufacturers warn that ammonia-based cleaners and glass cleaning fluid attack acrylic.

Do you walk on skylights?

Never. Skylights are not built to hold a person’s weight. We work from the roof around them and use poles to reach the glazing.

How often should skylights be cleaned?

Twice a year near the coast or under trees, once a year elsewhere. Doing them with your window cleaning saves a trip.

Can you fix a skylight that’s foggy between the panes?

No. Fog between the panes means the seal has failed, and cleaning can’t reach it. We’ll photograph it and tell you what kind of contractor to call.

Do you clean tubular skylights?

Yes. The roof dome is cleaned like acrylic, and the ceiling diffuser is cleaned from below.

Can you clean skylights on a tile roof?

Often, yes. We check the roof first. If it isn’t safe to walk, we clean from the edge or tell you we can’t do it safely.

Why is my skylight foggy between the layers?

That’s a failed seal in a double-glazed unit. Cleaning can’t fix it; the unit needs repair or replacement.

Can you fix crazing on an acrylic skylight?

No. Crazing is age and sun damage to the plastic. We clean gently so it doesn’t get worse.

How do you clean high skylights without ladders?

Mostly with soft brushes on extension poles. Outside, we reach the glazing from the roof edge so nobody stands over the skylight. Inside, poles reach a lot of high glass from below. Some skylights over vaulted ceilings still need a taller ladder, set up safely with floors protected.

Is a skylight leaking, or is that condensation?

It can be hard to tell from below. Condensation forms when warm, moist indoor air meets a cold skylight, and better ventilation helps. Leaks usually come from the flashing or a failed seal, which cleaning can’t fix. If we see water stains or damaged flashing while cleaning, we photograph it so you can show a roofer or skylight installer.

Can you clean skylights and gutters on the same visit?

Yes. We clear the gutters and the roof around the skylights first, then clean the skylights, and do windows last.

How often should skylights under redwoods be cleaned?

Twice a year, usually in early fall and again in spring, since needles and tannin stains build up quickly.

Can I pressure wash my skylight?

No. High-pressure water can push water past the flashing and seals, and it can scratch or craze an acrylic dome. We rinse at low pressure, use a mild cleaner and soft tools, and finish with a gentle rinse.

What should I do if my skylight leaks?

Call a roofer or skylight installer. Leaks usually come from the flashing or a failed seal, which cleaning can’t fix. If we see water stains or damaged flashing while cleaning, we photograph it so you can show the repair contractor.

How do you clean and restore cloudy skylights so you can see through them again?

It depends on what is causing the cloudiness. Film, needles and salt come off with the right cleaner: mild soap and soft tools on glass, diluted mild soap and light pressure on acrylic. Yellowed or crazed acrylic has aged and cleaning won’t fix it, and fog between panes means a failed seal.
