Short answer

Are Gutter Guards Worth It in Santa Cruz?

Often, yes, if your roof is under trees. Guards keep most leaves and needles out of the gutter, so you clean less often and storms are less likely to overflow it. But no guard is maintenance-free. Debris still collects on top, and fine needles and seed pods can work into some designs. Expect lighter, less frequent cleaning, not none.

Do gutter guards work with redwood needles? Redwood and pine needles are small enough to slip through or lodge in coarse screens. Fine micro-mesh keeps them out better, but needles can still sit on top and need brushing off. We’ll tell you which type suits your trees before you decide.

Our usual suggestion: under redwoods and pines, a fine mesh. Under broad leaves like oak and maple, mesh or a solid screen both work. We’ll look at your trees and roof before recommending one.

What Upkeep Do Gutter Guards Need?

Less than open gutters, but not zero.

What guards do

  • Keep most leaves and needles out of the gutter channel
  • Cut down how often gutters need a full clean
  • Reduce clogged downspouts during storms
  • Make moss and debris build-up in the gutter slower

What guards don’t do

  • Stop debris piling up on top of the guard
  • Replace the need for an occasional check
  • Fix sagging or leaking gutters
  • Stop moss growing on the roof itself

Moss on the roof too? Deal with it before or with the guards, since it washes down into the gutters. See moss removal.

Which Gutter Guard Works Best for Your Trees?

Match the guard to what actually falls on your roof.

Trees over the roofWhat fallsGuard that usually works best
RedwoodsFine needles and small cones all yearFine micro-mesh
PinesLong needles that mat togetherFine micro-mesh
OaksLeaves and acorns, mostly in fallMicro-mesh or a solid screen
EucalyptusBark strips, long leaves and seed podsSturdy mesh; expect debris to sit on top
Few or no treesDust, roof grit, the odd leafGuards may not be worth it; an annual clean may be enough

If no trees overhang the roof, we’ll tell you guards probably aren’t worth it. An annual gutter cleaning before storm season may be all you need.

Why Gutters Matter in Santa Cruz Winters

Most of the year’s rain falls in a few months.

Gutter vacuum pole cleaning guttersGutter vacuum pole cleaning gutters
MonthAverage rain (Santa Cruz)
November3.27 in
December6.47 in
January6.46 in
February6.07 in
March4.06 in

That’s over 26 inches in five months, out of an average of about 30.8 inches a year. In the San Lorenzo Valley, Boulder Creek averages about 52 inches a year. Gutters that clog during a storm overflow onto siding, windows and foundations. Guards don’t remove the need for checks, but they make a mid-storm clog much less likely.

Before we fit them

What We Check Before Installing Gutter Guards

Guards sit on top of your gutters. If the gutters have problems, guards hide them.

CheckWhy it matters
Gutter slopeWater has to run toward the downspouts, or it pools under the guard
Hangers and fastenersLoose hangers let gutters sag under the extra weight of wet debris
Seams and end capsLeaks drip behind the guard where you can’t see them
DownspoutsA blocked downspout makes any guard overflow
Roof edge and drip edgeSome guards tuck under the shingles; the roof edge has to suit that design

If we find problems, we’ll show you photos and let you decide whether to fix them first. We don’t fit guards over gutters that won’t drain.

How to Look After Gutter Guards

A few minutes a season keeps them working.

  • Look up after big storms. Water spilling over the front of the gutter means debris is sitting on the guard.
  • Brush or rinse the top surface of mesh guards when needles build up, from a ladder or with a pole.
  • Check downspout outlets at ground level once or twice a winter.
  • Book a check once a year, ideally in early fall. It’s quicker and cheaper than a full clean of open gutters.

Questions

Gutter Guard FAQ

Are gutter guards worth it in Santa Cruz?

If your roof is under trees, usually yes. Guards cut down how often gutters need cleaning, but they still need an occasional check.

What is the best gutter guard for pine needles?

A fine micro-mesh usually works best for pine and redwood needles. Coarse screens let needles lodge in the holes, and foam or brush inserts tend to trap them. Under pines, expect to brush or rinse the top of the mesh from time to time, since debris can still sit on it.

Do gutter guards need cleaning?

Less often than open gutters, but debris can sit on top and needs brushing or rinsing off from time to time.

Do you clean the gutters before installing guards?

Yes, always. Gutters are cleaned and downspouts flushed before any guard goes on.

Can you install guards on any gutter?

Most standard gutters, yes. If gutters are sagging, loose or leaking, we’ll point it out first, since guards don’t fix those problems.

Do you send photos of the gutter guard install?

Yes, before and after photos of the full gutter run.

Do we really need gutter guards if there are no trees around the house?

Often not. If nothing overhangs the roof, gutters mostly collect dust, roof grit and the odd leaf, and we’ll tell you guards probably aren’t worth it. An annual gutter cleaning before storm season may be all you need.

Will gutter guards stop my gutters overflowing?

They make clogs much less likely, but debris on top of the guard or a blocked downspout can still cause overflow. A yearly check keeps them working.

Can you install guards on sagging gutters?

We’ll point out the sag first. Guards don’t fix slope or loose hangers, and fitting them over a gutter that won’t drain causes problems.

What’s the best gutter guard for eucalyptus?

A sturdy mesh. Eucalyptus drops bark strips and long leaves, so expect some debris to sit on top and need clearing.

When is the best time to install gutter guards?

Early fall, after the summer drop and before the storms. The gutters get a full clean as part of the install.

Do gutter guards help with moss?

They keep moss clumps from the roof out of the gutter channel, but they don’t stop moss growing on the roof itself. See moss removal for that.

Can you install guards on two-story homes?

Yes, with proper ladder setup. We’ll tell you upfront if any section needs special access.

Do you remove old gutter guards?

Yes. Old or failed guards can be removed, the gutters cleaned, and new guards fitted.

How long will my new gutter guards last?

It depends on the material and how well they’re fitted. Ask us about the specific guard we recommend for your roof.

Do gutter guards void my roof warranty?

Some guard designs tuck under shingles. Check your roof warranty, and we’ll suggest a design that clips to the gutter if that’s a concern.

Can I see the guard before you install it?

Yes. We’ll show you a sample or photos of the guard type before you decide.

Where do you install gutter guards?

All of Santa Cruz County, with guards most useful in tree-heavy areas like the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley.

Do you clean the gutters before every install?

Yes. Gutters are cleaned and downspouts flushed before any guard goes on.

Do cheap gutter guards from the hardware store work?

They can. The difference is usually in the fit. Gutters should be cleaned first, slope and leaks checked, and corners and downspout openings cut and secured. Under needles, a fine mesh works better than coarse screens or foam inserts, which tend to trap debris. Ladder and roof-edge work is also your risk if you fit them yourself.
