What Dirty Storefront Glass Costs You
Customers judge the shop before they walk in.
Pole scrubber soaping commercial windowStorefront glass is the first thing a customer sees and the thing they touch on the way in. Hazy display windows hide merchandise, smudged doors look neglected, and on a grey morning a dirty front can make an open shop look closed. In a coastal town, glass that was clean on Monday can carry a salt haze by Friday, so the schedule matters as much as the cleaning.
| Problem | What customers notice | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Salt haze on display windows | Merchandise looks dull | Weekly exterior cleaning near the water |
| Fingerprints on doors | Looks untended | Door glass every visit |
| Streaked inside glass | Shows in afternoon sun | Inside glass on a set schedule |
| Dirty sills and ledges | Dust and dead insects in view | Wiped every visit |
Business Districts We Serve
Each one gets dirty in its own way.
| District | What the glass deals with | Typical schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Santa Cruz and Pacific Avenue | Street dust, foot traffic, fingerprints, morning fog | Weekly outside, monthly inside |
| Beach Flats, Wharf and Beach Street area | Salt spray and fog, sand, heavy visitor traffic | Weekly in season |
| Capitola Village and the Esplanade | Ocean spray, salt film, summer crowds | Weekly to every two weeks |
| 41st Avenue and mid-county centers | Road dust, parking-lot grime | Every two weeks |
| Westside and Mission Street | Traffic film, fog | Every two to four weeks |
| Aptos Village, Soquel, Scotts Valley | Pollen and dust, less salt | Every two to four weeks |
| Downtown Watsonville | Field dust and road film | Every two weeks |
These are suggested schedules; your foot traffic and how close you are to the water decide the right one. See the area guides for Santa Cruz, Capitola Watsonville and Downtown and Midtown Santa Cruz.
The Wharf and Capitola Village
The closer to the water, the faster the haze comes back.
The Santa Cruz Wharf opened on December 5, 1914 and was described as the longest pier on the West Coast, with restaurants, gift shops and tasting rooms over the water. High surf damaged it in December 2023, and a section at the end collapsed in a storm on December 23, 2024 before the wharf reopened on January 4, 2025. Businesses there and along Beach Street take spray, fog and salt every day.
Capitola is described as the oldest beach resort on the West Coast, with development as a seaside resort starting in 1869. Its village and Esplanade are lined with shops and waterfront restaurants a few steps from the sand. Glass that faces the beach in either place often needs cleaning far more often than the same glass a mile inland.
| Glass | What builds up | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean-facing dining room windows | Salt film from spray and fog | Weekly exterior cleaning in season |
| Patio windscreens and railings | Salt, sand and fingerprints | Cleaned on every visit |
| Entry doors | Sandy fingerprints | Door glass and push plates every visit |
| Display windows | Salt haze that hides merchandise | Inside and outside on a schedule |

Window Cleaning for Restaurants
Kitchens and dining rooms put more on the glass.
Restaurant glass picks up more than street dust. Cooking leaves a light film on inside glass near kitchens, patios add fingerprints and sunscreen on windscreens, and doors are touched all day. We schedule restaurant visits before prep starts or between services, and we keep cleaning solutions away from food areas.
| Restaurant glass | Common problem | Suggested schedule |
|---|---|---|
| Front windows and doors | Fingerprints, street dust, salt | Weekly |
| Dining room interior glass | Light cooking film | Every two to four weeks |
| Patio windscreens | Salt, sunscreen, hand marks | Weekly in season |
| Skylights over dining rooms | Dust and tree debris | Twice a year |
See skylight cleaning.
Cleaning Around Vinyl, Lettering and Film
Signage costs money to replace. We work around it.
Window cleaner scrubbing lower window pane| Item on the glass | How we clean it |
|---|---|
| Vinyl lettering and hours decals | Cleaned around by hand; no scraping over vinyl |
| Window film and tint | Products the film maker allows; no abrasive pads |
| Posters taped inside | Left in place; glass cleaned around them |
| Old tape and adhesive | Removed only with your OK |
Glass makers publish strict rules for coated glass, and some tempered glass scratches easily, according to the IWCA. If your storefront has coated glass, tell us the maker so we can follow its instructions.

What Cleaning Fixes, and What It Doesn’t
We’ll tell you before we start if something won’t come off.

| Grey haze on ocean-facing glass | Salt film from fog and spray | Yes |
| White rings on lower windows | Sprinkler minerals | Usually, with separate treatment |
| Haze that never clears | Etched glass | No |
| Fog between the panes | Failed seal in a double-pane unit | No; the unit needs repair |
| Gritty, dragging slider | Sand in the track | Yes, tracks are included |
| Torn or corroded screens | Salt air and age | Cleaned; repair is separate |

Storefront Window Cleaning: FAQ
Do you clean storefront windows in Santa Cruz?
Yes. We clean shop, restaurant, café and office glass on Pacific Avenue, in Capitola Village, along the Westside and in shopping centers across Santa Cruz County, inside and out.
How often should storefront windows be cleaned: weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly?
It depends on foot traffic and how close you are to the water. Busy street-level shops and restaurants usually clean the outside every one to two weeks and the inside monthly. Beachfront glass in Capitola Village or near the Wharf often needs weekly cleaning in season. Offices and quieter shops often do well every two to four weeks outside.
What time of day should storefront windows be cleaned?
Early morning, before you open, suits most shops. The glass is done before customers arrive and nobody steps around a bucket. We can also clean during business hours if that suits you better, working around customers and keeping walkways clear.
Do I have to be there?
Not for exterior glass. For inside glass, we can come during opening hours when it’s quiet or use access you arrange.
Do you clean door glass and handles?
Yes. Entry doors, push plates and door glass are included, since they collect the most fingerprints.
Can you work around window decals and vinyl lettering?
Yes. We clean carefully around decals and lettering and tell you if any are peeling. We don’t scrape over vinyl.
Do you clean restaurant patio glass and windscreens?
Yes. Glass windscreens, patio dividers and outdoor railings can be added to the route.
Do you sign a contract?
No long contract is needed. You choose the frequency and can change it. You get a flat price per visit.
What paperwork do you provide?
A W-9 before the first visit and an invoice per visit or per month, whichever you prefer.
What if it rains on my route day?
Exterior glass moves to the next dry day and we let you know. Inside glass can usually stay on schedule.
Do you clean upper-floor office windows?
Yes. Upper glass on low-rise buildings is cleaned from the ground with a water-fed pole where it reaches. Tell us the building height when you ask for a quote.
How do I get a storefront window cleaning quote?
Text the address, a few photos of the frontage and how often you’d like the glass done. You’ll get a flat price per visit, usually the same day.
Do you clean shopping center and strip mall frontages?
Yes. We can clean single units or set one route across several tenants, billed per tenant or to the property manager.
Can you add a clean before an event or sale?
Yes. Text us the date and we’ll add a visit, or move your regular route day to fit.
Do you clean offices above shops?
Yes. Upper-floor glass on low-rise buildings can be added to the route and is cleaned from the ground with a water-fed pole where it reaches.
Do you clean glass in malls or covered walkways?
Yes, where the property allows it. Covered storefronts get less salt and rain, so they often need cleaning less often than street-facing glass.
Can you clean during business hours?
Yes, if that suits you better. We work around customers and keep walkways clear, though most shops prefer early mornings.
Do you clean glass awnings and canopies?
Glass canopies over entries can be added when they’re safely reachable. We’ll look at access during the walk-around and include it in the flat price if we can do it.
Are restaurants priced like storefronts or like commercial window cleaning?
We price restaurants the same way as storefronts: one flat price per visit for the agreed scope. What moves the price is the amount of glass, entry doors, patio windscreens or railings, interior grease film and how often you want the glass done. Text photos of the frontage and we’ll quote it, usually the same day.
