Big Glass Among the Trees
Pasatiempo was laid out in the late 1920s and 1930s around Alister MacKenzie’s golf course, with houses designed to sit in the landscape and look out over it. Many homes, including mid-century ones, have floor-to-ceiling glass and high windows. Trees, high glass and skylights are the three things that shape window cleaning here.

High Windows, Clerestories and Walls of Glass
Most of the work here is reaching the glass safely.
Cleaning a high foyer transom window from a ladderHomes in Pasatiempo often have glass in places that are hard to reach: clerestory windows above the roofline, tall living room walls, two-story entries and windows over stairs. The outside of most of it can be reached from the ground with a water-fed pole, which scrubs with a brush and rinses with pure deionized water. Inside, high glass is cleaned with extension poles from the floor or from a ladder set on protected flooring.
| Glass | How we reach it | What we protect |
|---|---|---|
| Floor-to-ceiling living room glass | From the floor with poles and squeegees | Floors, rugs and furniture |
| Clerestory windows (outside) | Water-fed pole from the ground | Plants and decking |
| Clerestory windows (inside) | Extension pole or ladder | Floors, art and furniture |
| Two-story entries and stair windows | Ladder with padded feet, or a pole | Stair treads and railings |
| Glass beyond pole or ladder reach | Lift or other access, quoted separately | We tell you before quoting |

Pasatiempo Golf Course is irrigated with recycled water supplied by the Scotts Valley Water District, according to the district’s water management plan. Sprinkler water that dries on glass leaves mineral spots whatever its source.

Roof work comes before the windows.
Brushing a skylight on a tile roofLeaves, needles and sap collect on skylights and in gutters on wooded lots, and the first heavy rain sends it all to the downspouts. Cal OES guidance on defensible space, citing the state Board of Forestry, says to remove dead or dry leaves and pine needles from your roof and rain gutters, so clean gutters matter in fire season too.
| Roof item | What builds up | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Glass skylights | Needles, sap, pollen, green film | Cleaned from the roof, inside face from below |
| Plastic dome skylights | Film and fine scratches from debris | Soft brush and pure water, no solvents without testing |
| Gutters | Leaves and needles | Cleared by hand, downspouts flushed, photos sent |
| Solar panels | Pollen and leaves | Soft brush and deionized water |

Hard Water on the Glass
City water here is hard enough to spot.
A County of Santa Cruz environmental report places Pasatiempo Golf Course within the City of Santa Cruz water service area. The city’s 2025 water quality report lists average hardness of 160 mg/L at its Graham Hill plant, which supplies most of its water, and higher averages at the Beltz plants that run part of the year. That is hard water on the USGS scale. Check your water bill to confirm your provider.
| Hardness (mg/L as calcium carbonate) | Classification |
|---|---|
| 0 to 60 | Soft |
| 61 to 120 | Moderately hard |
| 121 to 180 | Hard |
| Over 180 | Very hard |
Tap water left to dry on glass leaves those minerals as spots, so we rinse exterior glass with deionized water. See hard water stain removal.

Fire Season Around Pasatiempo
Gutters and roofs are part of defensible space.
California’s updated fire hazard maps, released in 2025, flag high fire hazard areas around Scotts Valley, and homes in very high hazard zones need 100 feet of defensible space. Check your own address on the state’s map. Whatever the zone, needles in gutters and on the roof are fuel close to the house. After a fire, ash on windows and skylights should be rinsed off first, never wiped dry. See cleaning wildfire ash off windows.

Window Cleaning in Pasatiempo: FAQ
What is the best way to clean very high windows in a vaulted room with floor-to-ceiling glass?
From the floor with extension poles where possible, and from a properly set ladder or platform where not, with the floor and furniture protected first. Outside, a water-fed pole cleans most two-story glass from the ground. Very tall interior glass may need a taller ladder or a lift, which we tell you before quoting.
How do you safely remove pine pitch drippings from a skylight?
Soften the pitch before trying to move it. A cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol or a citrus-based remover, held on the spot, loosens it so it wipes off. Then wash and rinse. Never stand on the skylight, and test on a corner first, since plastic domes and coated glass can react to solvents.
Should screens come off when the windows are cleaned?
Yes for cleaning, since dirty screens put dust back on clean glass. We take them out, brush and rinse them, and put them back once dry. Whether you leave them off for part of the year is up to you; screens that stay out need dry, flat storage.
How do window cleaners protect hardwood floors indoors?
With drop cloths or towels under every window, padded ladder feet, and squeegees that pull water toward a towel instead of letting it run. We move small furniture only with your okay and put everything back where it was.
Is a ladder or a pole better for high windows?
A pole when it reaches, because it keeps people on the ground. A water-fed pole cleans most exterior glass up to the second story from the ground. Ladders are still the right tool for some interior high glass and for spots a pole cannot reach, and they need a stable base and someone who uses them every day.
