Gutter Cleaning in Santa Cruz, CA

Santa Cruz gets most of its rain between December and February, and it usually arrives in big storms, not drizzle. A gutter packed with redwood needles, oak leaves and eucalyptus bark can’t move that much water. We clean gutters by hand, flush and test every downspout, haul the debris away and send you photos.

Why it matters here

Why Gutter Cleaning Matters More in Santa Cruz Than Most Places

Short answer: big trees and concentrated rain. The city of Santa Cruz averages about 31 inches of rain a year (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals), and December, January and February carry most of it. The San Lorenzo Valley gets more. When a full winter storm hits a clogged gutter, the water goes over the edge instead of down the downspout.

Gutters packed with roof debris before the first stormGutters packed with roof debris before the first storm

Redwood needles and tannins

Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek and the Westside near UC Santa Cruz drop redwood needles year-round. They mat into a wet layer that holds water in the trough and stains the gutter face brown.

Oak, eucalyptus and pine

Live oak leaves in Scotts Valley and Soquel, eucalyptus bark and leaves in Aptos and Rio Del Mar, Monterey pine needles along the coast. Eucalyptus bark strips are long enough to bridge a downspout opening and plug it.

Roof granules and moss

Asphalt shingles shed granules as they age, and they settle in the gutter like sand. Moss from shaded north-facing roofs breaks off in clumps and adds to the sludge.

Overflow at the corners

Water that can’t drain spills over the front edge, usually at inside corners and above doors. That’s the stream you see pouring onto the walkway in a storm.

Fascia and siding rot

Water held against the fascia board soaks into the wood behind the gutter. On older Westside and Seabright homes with wood trim, that’s how rot starts.

Water at the foundation

Overflowing gutters and plugged downspouts drop roof water right next to the house instead of carrying it away. On hillside lots in the Santa Cruz Mountains, that runoff also erodes soil.

When should you clean gutters in Santa Cruz? At least once in fall, before the first real storm, usually October or November. Homes under redwoods, oaks or eucalyptus often need a second cleaning in mid-winter or early spring, after the trees have dropped the rest of their debris.

What’s Included in Our Gutter Cleaning

Every gutter job covers the same list. If a section needs something beyond cleaning, we tell you and photograph it before we leave.

Gutter full of plant growthGutter full of plant growth

Included on every gutter cleaning

  • Hand-cleaned troughs. Debris scooped out by hand, run by run, around the whole house.
  • Bagged and hauled away. What comes out of your gutters goes in our bags and leaves with us. It doesn’t get dumped in your planters.
  • Downspouts flushed. We run water through each downspout and clear any clog we find.
  • Flow test. Water down every run to check it drains toward the outlet and doesn’t pool.
  • Hangers and seams checked. Loose hangers, sagging runs, leaking seams and separated corners get noted.
  • Roof edge look. Lifted shingles, cracked tiles or moss at the edge are flagged while we’re up there.
  • Before and after photos. Sent the same day, so you can see the work without climbing a ladder.

Not included (we’ll tell you who to call)

  • Gutter replacement or new installation
  • Re-pitching or re-hanging long sagging runs
  • Fascia board or soffit repair
  • Roof repair or re-roofing
  • Underground drain line excavation

If we see any of these, you get photos and a straight explanation of what we saw.

Common Gutter Cleaning Complaints, and How We Avoid Them

We built our gutter service around the complaints that come up most in local reviews.

Gutter cleaning from roof leaf blowerGutter cleaning from roof leaf blower

“They left the gunk on my patio.”

Everything goes in bags and leaves with us. We walk the property before we go.

“They didn’t touch the downspouts.”

Every downspout gets flushed and tested. A clean gutter with a plugged downspout still overflows.

“I had no idea if they actually did it.”

You get before and after photos the same day, run by run.

“They showed up during a storm.”

We schedule ahead of the weather and reschedule if it’s unsafe to be on a ladder.

“The price went up when they got here.”

One flat number before we start. If we find a broken hanger or a crushed downspout, we show you and you decide.

“Nobody mentioned the rotting fascia.”

If we see damage, we tell you and photograph it. We’d rather you hear it from us in October than find it in February. See gutter cleaning before storm season for timing.

Pricing, explained

How Much Does Gutter Cleaning Cost in Santa Cruz?

We don’t quote a number without seeing the house, because the same price for every home would be wrong for most of them. These are the things that move it:

Stories and roof pitch

Single-story ranch gutters are a ladder job. Two and three-story gutters, steep roofs and hillside lots take more setup and more care.

Linear feet of gutter

More roofline means more gutter. Homes with many corners and dormers have more runs and more downspouts.

How full they are

Gutters cleaned every fall come out fast. Gutters that haven’t been touched in a few years, packed with redwood duff and growing plants, take much longer.

Gutter guards

Existing guards or screens have to be lifted, cleaned under and reset. Some guard types take more time than others. Compare gutter guard types.

Downspout condition

A downspout plugged solid, especially at an elbow, can take extra time to clear.

Bundled services

Adding windows, solar panels or skylights to the same visit is cheaper than booking each one separately.

How it works

How We Clean Gutters, Step by Step

No leaf blowers spraying wet debris across your siding and windows. Hand-cleaned, flushed, tested and photographed.

Ladder and pole work on a two-story homeLadder and pole work on a two-story home

Walk the roofline

We look at every run from the ground first: sags, loose hangers, overflow stains and where the downspouts drain.

Set up safely

Ladder stabilizers keep weight off the gutter itself. Drop cloths go down where debris could land.

Hand-clean every run

Debris is scooped out and bagged. Compacted sludge at the outlets is cleared all the way down.

Flush and test downspouts

Water through each downspout until it runs free at the bottom.

Check and photograph

Hangers, seams, corners and the roof edge get a look. Photos go to you the same day.

Clean up and haul off

Bags leave with us. We rinse any splatter off walkways before we go.

How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned in Santa Cruz County?

It depends on what grows over your roof and how much rain your part of the county gets.

Watsonville and FreedomOnce a year, in fallField dust and debris settle in gutters and turn to mud in the first rain.

Do gutter guards mean you never have to clean gutters? No. Guards keep out the big leaves, but redwood needles, pine needles and roof grit still get through or sit on top. Guarded gutters need less frequent cleaning, not none.

Gutter Problems We Look For While Cleaning

Cleaning is the best time to spot problems, because the gutter is empty and we can see the whole run.

What we checkWhat it can mean
Water pooling in a sectionThe gutter has lost its slope toward the downspout
Loose or bent hangersThe gutter is sagging or pulling away from the fascia
Drips at seams and end capsFailed sealant; water runs behind the gutter
Rust or holes in the troughOlder metal gutters near the end of their life
Water stains on the fasciaLong-term overflow or leaks behind the gutter
Downspouts that don’t drain freelyBlockages in elbows or at the outlet

We note and photograph anything we find, so it’s easy to get the right fix quoted.

Questions

Gutter Cleaning FAQ

Straight answers to what Santa Cruz homeowners ask before booking.

When is the best time to clean gutters in Santa Cruz?

Fall, before the first big storm, usually October or November. Homes under redwoods, oaks or eucalyptus often need a second cleaning in mid-winter or early spring.

How often do I need to clean my gutters? Once a year or twice a year?

Once a year in fall for most homes in town. Twice a year for homes under heavy tree cover, such as redwoods, oaks or eucalyptus, especially in the San Lorenzo Valley and the Aptos hills. The second cleaning usually falls in mid-winter or early spring, after the trees drop the rest of their debris.

Do you clean the downspouts too?

Yes. Every downspout is flushed and tested on every job. A clean gutter with a plugged downspout still overflows.

What do you do with the debris?

We bag it and take it with us. It doesn’t get dumped in your yard or planters.

Do you send photos?

Yes. You get before and after photos the same day, plus photos of anything we think you should know about, like a loose hanger or a leaking seam.

Can you clean gutters that have gutter guards?

Yes. We lift or clean around the guards depending on the type, clean the trough underneath and reset them.

Do you repair gutters?

We don’t replace gutters or rebuild sagging runs. If we see a problem, we photograph it and tell you what kind of contractor to call.

How do I know if my gutters need cleaning?

Watch for water spilling over the front edge in a storm, plants growing in the gutter, sagging runs, stains on the siding below, and downspouts that barely drip during heavy rain. If you’re under redwoods, oaks or eucalyptus and the gutters haven’t been cleaned since last fall, they likely need it before the first storm.

Can you clean gutters and windows on the same visit?

Yes, and it saves a second trip. Doing gutters first also means no gutter splatter lands on freshly cleaned glass.

Do you check for gutter damage?

Yes. We look for sagging, loose hangers, leaking seams and blocked downspouts while we clean, and photograph anything we find.

Should gutters be cleaned before or after windows?

Before. Gutter work drips debris and dirty water down the house, so windows should be cleaned last.

How much does gutter cleaning cost?

It depends on the house, so we give a flat quote instead of one price for everyone. Stories and roof pitch, feet of gutter, how full they are, any gutter guards and downspout condition all move the number. Adding windows or solar panels to the same visit costs less than booking each one separately. Quotes are free.

How long does gutter cleaning take?

It depends on the house. Single-story gutters that are cleaned every fall go fastest. Two and three-story homes, steep roofs, hillside lots and gutters packed with years of redwood duff take much longer, and a downspout plugged solid at an elbow can add extra time. Send photos of the roofline and we can tell you more.

How do professionals clean gutters?

We clean every run by hand and bag the debris, with no leaf blowers spraying it across your siding. Ladder stabilizers keep weight off the gutter itself. Then we flush and test each downspout, check hangers, seams and the roof edge, rinse any splatter off walkways and send before and after photos the same day.
