Post-Construction Window Cleaning in Santa Cruz

Paint overspray, manufacturer labels, silicone, stucco and concrete splatter, and construction dust removed from new or remodeled windows. Done carefully, because new glass is easy to scratch and the wrong scraper on the wrong glass is a costly mistake.

Short answer

Why Is Post-Construction Window Cleaning Different?

A regular window cleaning removes dirt. After construction, the glass has things bonded to it: paint, adhesive, mortar, silicone and dust that scratches if you wipe it dry. Removing them takes blades, solvents and time, and the method has to fit the glass, because tempered and coated glass can be damaged by careless scraping.

Can new windows be scratched by cleaning? Yes. Some glass, especially tempered glass, can scratch when scraped. We check for the tempered stamp, test a small area first and stop to talk to you if a residue can’t be removed safely.

Construction Residue and How We Handle It

Each one needs a different approach.

Etched or scratched already? If glass was damaged during construction, cleaning won’t fix it. We’ll point out existing scratches before we start so it’s documented for you and your contractor.

What Glass Makers and Window Cleaners Say About Scraping

There’s no single rule for every pane, which is why we check the glass before we start.

SourceWhat it saysWhat we do
International Window Cleaning Association (IWCA)Scrapers won’t scratch uncoated glass when properly used, and scraping is often the most practical way to remove certain construction debris. Some tempered glass surfaces are highly susceptible to scratching. We check for coatings and tempered stamps and test a small area first
Cardinal Glass (a glass manufacturer)Recommends that metal blades never be used on its glass, warns against abrasive cleaners, and says its warranties don’t cover scratching from metal bladesIf the glass or window maker forbids blades, we use non-blade methods only
BothTest a small area before cleaning the restEvery job starts with a test area

Ask your window supplier or contractor for the glass maker’s cleaning instructions. If they prohibit blades, tell us before we quote, because some residue takes much longer to remove without them.

For builders

How to Protect Glass During Construction

The cheapest post-construction clean is the one where the glass was protected in the first place.

  • Cover glass before stucco, paint and concrete work, and keep the covering on until those trades are finished.
  • Don’t let trades lean tools or materials on glass; grit trapped under them scratches.
  • Wash off splatter while it’s fresh with water, not a dry rag.
  • Leave manufacturer labels for the final clean, rather than peeling them and leaving adhesive behind.
  • Get the glass maker’s cleaning instructions to the window cleaner before the final clean.

The IWCA notes that protecting glass surfaces during construction is called for in the joint IWCA and Glass Association of North America bulletin on construction site protection of architectural glass.

Our process

How a Post-Construction Window Clean Works

Slower and more careful than a regular clean, because the glass is new and the residue is bonded.

Walk the job and document

We note existing scratches, chips and defects in photos before we start, so they’re on record for you and your contractor.

Identify the glass

Coatings, tempered stamps, tints and the glass maker’s instructions decide which methods are allowed.

Test area

A small, out-of-the-way area is cleaned first and checked before we do the rest.

Soak and soften

Labels, adhesive, mortar and silicone are soaked so they lift with less force.

Remove residue

Lifted by hand, with solvents, or with a blade only where the glass allows it and only on wet glass.

Full clean and detail

Glass washed and squeegeed, frames, tracks and sills vacuumed and wiped.

Final walkthrough

We check every pane with you or your site lead and photograph the finished work.

Skylights, Coated Glass and Large Panels

Some glass needs extra care after construction.

Glass typeExtra care we take
SkylightsCleaned from the roof once roof work is finished; overspray and dust removed without scraping acrylic domes
Low-E or coated glassWe check which side is coated and follow the maker’s instructions; some coatings can be harmed by certain cleaners
Tempered glassChecked for the tempered stamp; test area first; no blades if the maker forbids them
Large fixed panelsCleaned in sections with careful squeegee work, from the ground with a water-fed pole where possible

Cardinal’s glass bulletin warns that certain cleaning products may harm exterior coatings and recommends checking for coatings before cleaning.

Questions

Post-Construction Window Cleaning FAQ

What is post-construction window cleaning?

Removing paint, labels, adhesive, silicone, stucco, concrete splatter and dust from windows after a build or remodel, plus cleaning tracks and frames.

Can you remove paint from windows without scratching them?

In most cases, yes. We test a small area, keep the glass lubricated and use solvents instead of blades on sensitive glass.

Why does post-construction cleaning cost more than regular cleaning?

It takes longer. Each pane may need scraping, soaking or solvent work, not just a wash.

When should I book it?

After paint, stucco and exterior work are done, and before the final walkthrough or move-in.

Do you clean skylights and sliding doors too?

Yes, along with tracks and frames.

Do you work with contractors?

Yes. We can schedule around your punch list and handover date.

Can a razor blade scratch window glass?

It can on some glass. The IWCA says scrapers won’t scratch uncoated glass when properly used, but some tempered glass is highly susceptible to scratching, and some glass makers say metal blades should never be used. We check before we start.

What if my window manufacturer says no blades?

Then we don’t use them. Residue is removed with soaking, solvents and hand methods, which takes longer.

Will you document existing scratches?

Yes. We photograph existing scratches and defects before we start, so they’re on record.

Is construction residue that only shows when the glass is wet a defect?

Cardinal’s bulletin says residue only visible when the glass is wet isn’t considered a glass defect. A proper clean usually removes it.

Do you work for contractors and builders?

Yes. We schedule around your punch list and handover date and photograph the finished work.

How long after construction should I book the window clean?

After all paint, stucco and exterior work is finished, so the glass doesn’t get splattered again.

Do you clean interior partitions and glass doors?

Yes, including adhesive and labels on new interior glass.

Can you clean windows before the final inspection?

Yes. Tell us the inspection date and we’ll schedule the clean before it.

Do you clean skylights after construction?

Yes, from the roof once roof work is finished. Acrylic domes are never scraped.

Can cleaning products damage coated glass?

Some can. Cardinal’s bulletin warns that certain glass cleaning products may harm exterior coatings, so we check for coatings first.

Do you clean window tracks after construction?

Yes. Construction grit is vacuumed out of tracks and thresholds so windows and doors run smoothly.

Where do you do post-construction cleaning?

All of Santa Cruz County, for homeowners, contractors and builders.

The stucco crew didn’t mask the windows. What gets stucco off without damaging the glass?

Soaking and patience. Stucco splatter hardens into a crust that bonds to glass, so we soak and soften it, then lift it from the surface without grinding across the glass. A blade is used only on wet glass that allows it. We test a small area first and photograph any existing scratches before we start.

What is the best way to get silicone off windows without a razor?

Soften it and lift it. Silicone and caulk smears are soaked so they lift with less force, then removed by hand or with a solvent, with the window seals left intact. It’s slower than scraping, but it’s how we work when the glass maker forbids blades. Check the glass while it’s wet, since thin smears are hard to see dry.

What removes stubborn stickers from new windows?

Soaking. Manufacturer labels are soaked until they lift, and the adhesive is dissolved instead of scraped off dry. Peeling labels dry leaves sticky residue behind, so it’s best to leave them for the final clean. We test a small area first, since some glass scratches easily if it’s scraped.

How do you clean windows covered in drywall compound?

Wet it first and never wipe it dry. Drywall dust is abrasive and scratches glass when wiped dry, so we soak and soften any compound, lift it off, then wash and squeegee the glass. Tracks and frames are vacuumed and wiped too. We test a small area first and note any existing scratches before we start.
