What Is on Your Shower Glass
The white haze on shower glass is usually two things together. Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium behind when it dries, and those same minerals react with soap to form soap scum. Both sit on the surface and can be removed. The third possibility is etching, where water has damaged the glass itself, and that is not something cleaning can remove.
Squeegee on an interior glass panelWhy won’t the spots on my shower glass come off no matter what I use? Either the deposits are thick enough to need repeated soaks, or the glass is etched. Etching is damage to the glass itself, not something sitting on it. Wet the glass: if the cloudiness disappears while wet and comes back as it dries, it is usually etched rather than dirty.

How Hard Is the Water in Santa Cruz County?
Hardness is measured as calcium carbonate. The U.S. Geological Survey calls 61 to 120 mg/L moderately hard, 121 to 180 mg/L hard and over 180 mg/L very hard. One grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L. Here is what local water providers report.
| Water provider and area | Reported hardness | Source year |
|---|---|---|
| City of Santa Cruz, Graham Hill plant | Average 160 mg/L (136 to 192) | 2025 report |
| City of Santa Cruz, Beltz plants (run part of the year) | Averages of 258 and 265 mg/L | 2025 report |
| Soquel Creek Water District, Capitola and Soquel | 150 to 370 mg/L (9 to 22 gpg) | District hardness page |
| Soquel Creek Water District, Aptos and Rio del Mar | 150 to 200 mg/L (9 to 12 gpg) | District hardness page |
| San Lorenzo Valley Water District, main system | Average 108 ppm (52 to 460) | 2022 report |
| San Lorenzo Valley Water District, Felton | Average 218 ppm (110 to 290) | 2022 report |
| City of Watsonville, treated groundwater | Average 278 ppm (190 to 540) | 2024 report |
Most of the county falls in the hard to very hard range, which is why shower glass here clouds over quickly if it is left to air-dry. Your own provider’s latest water quality report gives the numbers for your address.

Deposits You Can Remove vs Etching You Cannot
Vitro, a glass maker, explains that water left on glass starts a corrosion process: first it pulls sodium out of the glass, and once the water becomes alkaline enough the glass surface itself starts to dissolve, leaving haze, pitting or a rainbow sheen. Mineral deposits sit on top of the glass. Etching is in it.
Water and soap left to dry on glass| Mineral deposits and soap scum | Etching | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Calcium, magnesium and soap residue on the surface | Damage to the glass surface itself |
| When wet | Still visible | Often disappears, then returns as the glass dries |
| To the touch | Rough or gritty film | Smooth glass with haze in it |
| Cleaning | Removed with the right cleaner and time | Not removed by cleaning |
| Options | Clean, then dry the glass after showers | Light polishing on uncoated glass, or replacing the panel |

Factory Coatings Change What Can Be Used
Many glass shower doors leave the factory with a protective coating that makes water bead and sheet off. Each coating maker has its own list of what not to use, and the wrong product can strip the coating or void its warranty. So the first thing we do is look for a coating and ask what you know about the door.
| Coating | What the maker says |
|---|---|
| ShowerGuard (Guardian) | Squeegee or towel-dry after each shower; use cleaners from its approved list; aftermarket coatings may damage the surface or void the warranty |
| EnduroShield | Avoid abrasives and polishes, including water spot removers, toothpaste and cerium oxide; diluted vinegar, CLR, Windex and a damp Magic Eraser are allowed |
| Diamon-Fusion | A coating that makes glass smoother and water-repellent; buildup left too long can still become permanent |
| Uncoated glass | More cleaning options, but abrasive pads and blades can still scratch |
If you do not know whether your door is coated, the installer or the glass maker can usually tell you. Some coatings carry a small mark in a corner of the glass.

How We Clean Shower Glass, Step by Step
Squeegee through soap on glassCheck the glass
We look for a factory coating, scratches that are already there, and haze that stays when the glass is wet, which points to etching.
Protect the bathroom
Towels go down on the floor and over nearby stone or wood, since some cleaners can mark natural stone.
Test a small area
The cleaner is tried on a corner of the glass first, matched to the coating and to how heavy the buildup is.
Treat and scrub
The cleaner is given time to work and scrubbed with a non-scratch pad. Heavy scale gets more than one round rather than harsher tools.
Rinse and squeegee
The glass is rinsed, squeegeed and the edges dried, along with the frames, hinges and bottom track.
Mirrors and walkthrough
Mirrors are cleaned with the cleaner on the cloth and the edges dried, and we show you anything that turned out to be etching.
Why We Do Not Use Razor Blades on Shower Glass
Most shower doors are tempered glass. During tempering, tiny fragments of glass can fuse to the surface. A glass industry technical bulletin says razor blades and metal scrapers of any sort are not recommended cleaning tools, because they can drag those fragments across the glass and leave scratches. The International Window Cleaning Association describes the same problem with fabricating debris on tempered glass.
Squeegees, not blades, for tempered glass- No razor blades or metal scrapers on tempered shower glass.
- No steel wool or scouring powders that can scratch.
- No polishing compounds on glass whose coating maker rules them out.

Bathroom Mirrors and Black Edges
Bathroom mirrors get the same spots and haze from steam and splashes, but they need a different approach. The dark creep that starts at a mirror’s edges is damage to the silver backing, caused by moisture, and by cleaner that runs down and pools at the edges.
- The Glass Association of North America’s mirror division advises against mirror cleaners that contain ammonia or vinegar, and against acid or alkali cleaners.
- Cleaner goes on the cloth, never sprayed directly on the mirror.
- Edges are dried last so no moisture is left sitting there.
- Black edges that are already there cannot be cleaned off; drying the edges helps keep them from spreading.

Keeping Shower Glass Clear
With water this hard, the glass will cloud over again. These habits slow it down a lot.
Light cleaning between deep cleans- Squeegee the glass after every shower, or towel-dry it.
- Leave the door open or run the fan so the enclosure dries.
- Use cleaners your glass or coating maker approves, and test anything new on a corner.
- Wipe soap and shampoo splashes before they dry.
- If your home has a water softener, keep it working; it reduces the minerals that cause scale.
Is there a way to stop water spots on a glass shower? Squeegee or towel-dry the glass after every shower. Guardian, the maker of ShowerGuard glass, says this helps prevent water spots, and it works on any glass. Spots form when water dries on the glass and leaves its minerals behind, so less water left on the glass means fewer spots.
Shower Glass and Mirror FAQ
Can you remove hard water stains from shower doors with vinegar and baking soda?
Vinegar on its own is the useful part. It is a weak acid that dissolves mineral deposits if it is left on long enough, often a soaked towel for a couple of hours. Mixing it with baking soda neutralizes the acid, so use them separately if at all, and check first whether your glass has a coating with its own care rules.
How do you clean cloudy shower glass?
Start by finding out what the cloudiness is. Soap scum and mineral film come off with the right cleaner and a non-scratch pad. If the glass is still cloudy when wet, it is likely etched, and cleaning will not clear it. Light etching on uncoated glass can sometimes be improved by polishing; heavy etching cannot.
How do I clean a mirror that has been stained by steam?
Steam leaves a film of minerals and soap on the mirror as it dries. Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened with a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner, applied to the cloth rather than the mirror, then dry the glass and especially the edges. Running the fan during and after showers keeps the film from building up.
Will a whole-house water softener keep my shower glass cleaner?
It should help. Softening removes much of the calcium and magnesium that form scale and react with soap to make scum, so new buildup forms more slowly. It will not undo deposits or etching that are already there, and the glass still needs drying after showers.
Is it worth putting a protective coating on a glass shower door?
Coatings make glass smoother and more water-repellent, so it is easier to keep clean. Many shower doors already have a factory coating. If yours does, adding an aftermarket product can damage it or void the warranty, so check with the door or glass maker first.
What causes white spots on glass shower doors?
Minerals in the water. When water dries on the glass, the calcium and magnesium stay behind as white spots. Soap adds to it, because hard water reacts with soap to form soap scum, a white film that holds even more minerals.
How do I get soap scum film off glass shower doors?
Use a cleaner made for soap scum or a mild acid, give it a minute or two to work, scrub with a non-scratch pad and rinse well. Thick, old film may need several rounds. Check the care instructions first if the glass has a factory coating.
Is a Magic Eraser safe on shower glass?
It depends on the glass. EnduroShield’s care guide lists a damp Magic Eraser as acceptable on its coated glass, while other makers ask you to avoid anything abrasive. Check your glass maker’s list and try it on a corner first.
How do you remove black spots from the corners of an old mirror?
They cannot be cleaned off. Black edges and corners are damage to the silver backing behind the glass, usually from moisture and cleaner running into the edges. The damage can be kept from spreading by drying the edges and never spraying cleaner directly on the mirror, but fixing it means replacing the mirror.
I tried Bar Keepers Friend on my shower glass and the spots are still there. Now what?
Either the buildup needs more time and more rounds, or the glass is etched. Bar Keepers Friend says to leave its cleaner on for no more than a minute, use a non-scratch pad and test a hidden spot, which limits how much it can do on heavy scale. If the haze is still there when the glass is wet, it is likely etching.
